I’ve always enjoyed taking pictures at rodeos ~ A child eating ice cream, iconic cowboys sitting on the fence with their hat tipped back talking and one upping each other, fast horses, pretty girls….and action.
And sometimes….it’s all distilled into a singular moment.
I was in the announcer’s box , the back up timer for the pole bending and barrel racing events at the 2010 Orick Rodeo. I saw children coming and going beneath the box, leaning and climbing on the chutes where the broncs and bulls would later load into. This young girl leaned, and watched the competitors. To get this shot I had to work in stages, because I was supposed to focus on event timing. Time, grab the camera bag. Time, open the bag, make sure I have the right lens and setting. Time, focus and shoot. Time, get a few more shots….and here’s the winner!
